For Michelle Battista, 2016 proved to be the best and worst year of her life.
Just a few short months before her scheduled wedding to her beloved high school sweetheart, Blair, Michelle was blissfully preparing to start her life with her soon-to-be husband. After nine formative years of loving each other fiercely – and planning their future together - Blair had proposed in March. It was, for Michelle, an absolute dream come true.
Nine months later, tragedy struck; Michelle’s wildest dreams soon turned into her worst nightmare.
On December 9th, 2016, Michelle and Blair had gone to dinner together.“You know, when you’re with someone for so long, sometimes things as simple as going out to eattogether can feel automatic, as though you’re going through the motions,” Michelle recounts. “Butsomething about that night just felt different. It was special, and I couldn’t understand why at the time.”
After, she had met a friend at a local movie theatre. She recalls texting Blair about how connected to him she had felt, and was met with a simple, “I love you” in response.
That simple text would be the last she’d ever receive from Blair.
As she returned home from her evening out, their wedding song, “Say You Won’t Let Go” by JamesArthur, began to play on the radio. As she pulled in the driveway of the home she shared with Blair, she allowed the song to finish before turning the car off, and heading inside.
Within minutes, Michelle had found Blair unresponsive.
“After I opened the door, I remember just standing there for a second, stunned,” Michelle remembers all too well. “I ran over to him and touched his cheeks and lips. I started to shake his shoulder, but he just wouldn’t wake up.”
Blair was pronounced dead of a heart too big.
For Michelle, the road to recovery has been a hard one.
“For so many years, it was ‘Michelle and Blair.’ I didn’t really know who I was without him, and suddenly, here I was having to find out.”
Today, Michelle no longer mourns the loss of her late fiancé, but, rather, celebrates his life. Michelle joins us to discuss moving on from heartbreak, the lasting grief a death can bring, and how she managed to surprise herself by falling in love again.
